Abstract

Focused on the period between 1885 and 1893, this project deals with how slaves, freed persons, and free laborers in South Pernambuco region called "Zona da Mata" experienced the implications of the abolition of slavery. Based on a wide range of archival sources, the work recovers the lived experiences of ordinary men and women, analyzing the strategies employed by slaves and former slaves during this important shift in labor relations in an agricultural region wi th a comparatively low slave population.
