Abstract

The concepts introduced by Winnicott of true and false self are fundamental in his theory of personal maturing and characterize a particular way to conceive the human being, his task on the world and his psychic constitution. So, the articulation of the concepts of true and false self - along with the concepts of experience and potential space - opens a range of possibilities to a new dimension of the comprehension of psychic health and of the illness at the different steps of individual development. This study objective is to rebuild, systematize and analyse the Winnicott theory of self, through a rigorous inventory of the concepts of self, true self and false self along the work of D. W. Winnicott. Thus, it is intended to detach its relevance to the comprehension, the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of human suffering - like the experience of emptiness, absence of itself, lack of sense of life - that many times don't find proper diagnosis and interventions, because they not fit the psychopathological criteria described. Consequently it is intended to contribute with subsidies so that, at the several ambits of relationship of a person - family, school, professional formation, job market, personal interactions - it may be possible make easier the healthy maturing of the individuals, inclusive under the point of view of prevention.
