Abstract

Recent neuroimaging findings suggest that the Orbitalfrontal Cortex (OFC) plays a key role in the neurobiological model of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Other cerebral areas such as thalamus, basal ganglia (especially the caudate nucleus and putamen), the anterior cingulate cortex, amygdala and cerebellum also contribute to trace the etiology of OCD. Also related with this disorder, several neuropsychological studies show deficits in memory and/or planning in these patients. With the advent of functional Magnetic Resonance imaging (fMRI) we can identify which areas are more activated in the use of a particular paradigm. Using a neuropsychological paradigm, we investigate the ability of planning and semantic organization during the recall of episodic verbal memory. The regions of interest of this study are OFC, Dorsolateral Pre-Frontal Cortex (DLPFC) and Ventrolateral Pre-Frontal Cortex (VLPFC). The aim is to use fMRI to identify neural correlates associated with verbal memory in 20 drug naive OCD patients pre and post specific instructions. These instructions for using categorical semantic strategies help the recall the lists of words, improving the score. The comparison is made with a control group matched case-by-case composed of healthy subjects. The hypothesis is that the patients will present changes in the activation of the OFC and worse scores on the test during free recall, but after the instruction, the results will be fitted to the control group with greater activation of VLPFC and DLPFC.
