Abstract

Biodegradation of municipal solid waste in landfills is an important source of methane to the atmosphere. This gas has a significantly greater contribution to the retention of heat in the atmosphere and consequent increase in global warming (greenhouse effect) than carbon dioxide. The biological oxidation of methane in landfill cover systems is an alternative to reduce emissions. This process occurs by microbial activity in environments where methane and oxygen are available. In this project, the biological oxidation of methane in cover systems will be studied to define the characteristics of the most appropriate support material to increase methane oxidation. Climate conditions will be considered. An experimental coverage (biofilter) will be installed at the landfill in Campinas, DELTA 1A, using the system of vertical collection of biogas as methane source. The support material of the experimental cover will be a mixture of compost and soil. Biogas flow, methane consumption and geotechnical and microbiological characteristics of the material will be monitored throughout the experiment. (AU)
