Abstract

Although Syllidae is one of the most diverse families of polychaetes, with about 55 genera and 700 species recently described, few studies on this family were carried out in Brazil until present. Currently, only 80 species of syllids have been registered from off the Brazilian coast, a low number considering the abundance and diversity of this family in other areas. The present project aims to inventory the species of Syllidae occurring off the coast of the sates of Pernambuco to Paraíba, through the identification, description and illustration (with the aid of a camera lucida) of material belonging to the five sub-families of syllids (Syllinae, Autolytinae, Eusyllinae, Anoplosyllinae and Exogoninae), collected from samples of sponges, ascidians, bryozoans, zoanthids, bivalve beds, calcareous algae, such as rodoliths, and foliose algae on the intertidal zone of rocky shores of these states. Material will be sorted alive under stereomicroscope and all the polychaetes will be relaxed to death in menthol solution, preserved in 4% formalin and, after some weeks, washed and transferred to 70% ethanol. Identifications will be made through morphological characters, according to specialized literature. When the number and conditions of the specimens allow for that, specimens will be also studied and photographed under scanning electron microscopy. (AU)
