Abstract

The aim of this project is to continue an on-going project which studies the species of polychaetes living on hard substrates along the state of Paraíba, from the intertidal zone to shallow sublitoral; if approved by FAPESP, the project will be expanded to the state of Pernambuco. According to preliminary observations by a recently concluded project (Projeto Biota Paraíba - macrofauna de praias com substrato consolidado da zonaentremarés ao infralitoral), the area has a very rich fauna of polychaetes, but that study was focused on macrofauna and so it did not include most of the polychaete species. Therefore, the area will be studied by scrapping from the substrates small samples of sponges, ascidians, bryozoans, zoanthids, mussel beds, aggregations of sabelariids, tufts of algae and similar micro-habitats, and by breaking and/or decalcifying nodules of calcareous algae and small colonies of scleractinian corals. The samples will be gathered at peaks of low tide, from the intertidal zone to shallow sublitoral, down to around 1.5 m deep. The material will be sorted alive under stereomicroscope, the specimens of polychaetes will be relaxed in menthol solution, fixed in 4% formaline and posteriorly rinsed in fresh water and transferred to 70% ethanol solution. The identifications will be made by students (with this material included in their monographs, M. Sc. Dissertations or Ph. D. thesis), or renowned scientists, specialists on each group, preferably from Brazil. In addition to the contribution to improve the knowledge on the biodiversity of marine invertebrates occurring along the Brazilian coast, this project will also contribute to the education of new taxonomists in at least two labs. The results will be published in specialized journals and/or presented in scientific meetings. This project is partially founded by CNPq, by Edital Universal 2008. (AU)
