Abstract

The Atlantic Forest is a hotspot, with high biodiversity levels and a high level of deforestation and degradation. The Pernambuco Centre of Endemism (PCE), originally distributed in northern São Francisco River, in the states of Paraíba, Alagoas, and Pernambuco is today the most endangered Atlantic Forest region and one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, as only small and isolated habitat fragments have remained. On the other hand, this is also the less studied Atlantic Forest region. While four bird species have been recognized as extinct in the last few years, a number of recently discovered bird species are still being described, indicating that soon science will miss the opportunity to know a number of undescribed taxa, and it will be too late to invest in the conservation of the endangered species. The lack of knowledge regards not only to the composition of the biodiversity, but also to ''where'' and ''why'' they are concentrated. Then, in this proposal our challenges are: 1) to improve the knowledge on the taxonomy of birds and mammals from the PCE, most of which can be lost before scientific recordings; 2) to improve the knowledge on the parameters that affect the distribution and persistence of the organisms, focusing on Alagoas state; 3) to use this knowledge to propose and to apply conservation management practices, and 4) to implement a program of scientific divulgation to the general public about the importance of the PCE and of the researches proposed here.
