Abstract

Malaria is an infectious and parasitic disease affecting a high percentage of world population, about 40%. Is prevalent in the tropics where the vector is better able to develop. Brazil has shown 40% of malaria cases in America, with 99% of them occurring in the Amazon states. In Maranhão, malaria is still endemic greater impact because of the phytogeographic aspects of Amazônia and the historical legacy of having supplied more labor-intensive for the gold in the 70's. The human malaria is caused by four species of malaria, Plasmodium vivax, P. falciparum, P. malariae and P. ovale (restricted to Africa). And it is assumed that at least twenty species are parasites of nonhuman primates. In Central and South the widely distributed species is P. brasilianum and specifically in southeastern Brazil is the P. simium. Several species of neotropical primates have been found naturally infected in Brazil in several states. Using traditional techniques of identification such as gout and thick blood films for the verification of Plasmodium morphological, molecular, as PCR to molecular analysis, and serological techniques such as Fluorescent Antibody (IFA) for detection of antibodies against erythrocytic stages parasites. The work aims to characterize the etiology, epidemiology and
