Abstract

The brominated flame retardants (with emphasis on polybrominated diphenyl ethers) are used widely in a variety of consumer goods to increase their fire resistance and / or high temperatures in case of fire, they reduce the spread of fire interfering burning material, thus increasing the chances of escape and reducing the severity of burns. To this end polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) represent the class most used due to its efficiency in controlling the spread of flame and low cost. These compounds are among the newly emerging environmental contaminants known to have a lack of toxicological data, especially regarding the health effects and biomarkers of exposure and potential harm to the environment, which is a recent concern in the scientific community. The possible contamination by these compounds, water sources and the real possibility of shortages of fresh water in the near future make it essential that the studies provide support for the preparation of laws that adequately protect this natural resource. In Brazil, was recently published in Resolution 396 of the National Council on the Environment (CONAMA), which tackles the groundwater reserves. While this legislation is broad, does not contain any of the emerging contaminants, which can contaminate both surface and underground reservoirs. Because the mitochondrion is recognized as the main organelle producing cellular energy, and play a key role in the maintenance of many cellular functions, the mitochondria is a great tool for the study of activities of toxic substances such as brominated flame retardants. Thus, this project aims to provide data to the scientific community and especially the legislative authorities of the country about the harmful effects of PBDEs using tests with isolated mitochondria to assess the need for inclusion of these compounds in the resolution of the National Council on the Environment Groundwater.
