Abstract

Flutists change the timbre of the sound produced by their instrument, by changing the configuration of their vocal tract, using empirical imagery. However, we found no scientific research aimed at measuring how and in what degree those changes affect the timbre of the flute, given the large number of variables involved. Considering the changes of timbre are a key element to musical performance, surpassing the purely technical domain of the instrument, and that control these changes make the musician a part of the process of musical creation, unpublished experiments are proposed aiming to determinate the mechanism and the degree of influence of changes in the vocal tract on the timbre of the flute, in each execution region, by the isolation of variables, such as movements of lips and jaw. The research also seek to expand the didactic possibilities of these alterations, renewing interest in studying and teaching the instrument. It is believed that this perspective will be able to stimulate both learning beginners, facilitating a good response of the instrument, and advanced flutists, with enrichment and better technical performance in areas of greatest difficulty.
