Abstract

With this research proposal, intends to make an effort reflective about the average South American cities. Seeks to grasp the new territorial arrangements outlined by the process of urban restructuring in recent decades, have boosted the economy, politics and social life in these cities. This process has contributed to the formation of a more complex urban structure, characterized by policentrality. In this sense, new central locations have been configured in the intra-urban structure of medium-sized South American cities by the combination of various factors such as the dispersal of tertiary activities, the increased mobility of the city, new residential locations, amongst others. The pace of demand in production and consumption of goods charged by the new regime of accumulation has contributed to a homogeneity of the new spaces in these cities. The aim of the present study to examine the disposition morphological and expressions of centrality that these structures and show condition. To this end, five cities in three South American countries, distinct from each other on their morphology, the historical process of urbanization, geographical location, cultural and other factors were listed for the object of study, namely: Campina Grande, Presidente Prudente and Passo Fundo in Brazil; Tandil in Argentina and Los Angeles, Chile. Thus, the similarities and differences between them and between the new central locations to be identified in them can be explained by the same kinds of reasons. In addition, we seek to contribute to the proposition and / or methodological support for studies of the Network of Researchers on Medium-Sized Cities (ReCiMe).
