Abstract

The blood gas analysis and the electrolyte measurement are important laboratory tests and help in diagnosis of various diseases, allowing a rapid and appropriate clinical intervention. These tests should be performed as soon as possible after blood collection, although it is often difficult due to the distance between the laboratory and the collection site. With this,portable equipments began to acquire extreme importance, since they allow to obtain fast and accurate results. Among the portable systems for blood gas analysis, the most used is the i-STAT", that is capable to analyze biochemical, hematological and change in blood gases in less than two minutes. The poliencephaalomalacia in sheep can be caused by a deficiency or disorder in the metabolism of thiamine, high intake of sulfur and experimental inoculation of bovine herpesvirus 5. There are no studies on literature about the use of blood gas analysis to aid in the diagnosis of polioencephalomalacia. The aim of this study is the venous blood gas analysis and the analysis of electrolytes in confined sheep experimentally induced to polioencephalomalacia by the intake of a diet rich in carbohydrates and high in sulfur.
