Abstract

Generation of Digital Terrain Models (DTM) from optical image is explored for many years and has been developed with the computational evolution, becoming increasingly necessary for all applications where the surface elevation knowledge is necessary. New techniques for the matching process using images are emerging and providing interesting results for research and also for the commercial sector. However, commercials photogrammetry softwares are limited to codes already implemented, it is not flexible to test different techniques and adapt them. In this context, the aim of this project is to study and implement techniques for the DEMs generation that is still in development, such as the use simultaneously of multiple images in the matching process using the Vertical Line Locus method. The matching precision increases by using the intersection of several beams, more than two, instead of a pair of images as usual in classic methods. The implementation will be made in the program ARMOD-DTM. The code of matching images method, Semi-Global Matching (SGM), will be inserted and adapted in this program. The SGM is a recent technique which attracted much academic and commercial interest due to excellent results in the search for homologous points. To investigate the resulted model quality it will be compared to DTM data generated from laser scanning. An analysis will be done to verify the most appropriate methods and thresholds for the correlation of multiple images.
