Abstract

The supply of energy is essential for the maintenance of modern society. Currently, the biggest concern with the environment stimulates the research of renewable fuel such as the second generation ethanol. The production of second generation ethanol involves a step of enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic material. The use of enzymatic hydrolysis has significant advantages over other methods, however, its use is subject to cost of production of the cellulolytic enzyme complex. To make feasible the production of second generation ethanol is essential to enable production of cellulolytic enzymes. To minimize production costs, it is important to find microorganisms with increased production of enzymes of interest as well as optimize its production in bioreactors. The aim of this project is to study the potential of the fungus Penicillium echinulatum, recently appointed in the literature as a producer of enzymes witch are important in the hydrolysis of lignocellulosic material, and also optimize the growing conditions and operating parameters for submerged cultivation in bioreactors. Preliminary results of hydrolysis with the material of the fungus showed its competitive nature in relation to enzyme cocktails already commercially available. (AU)
