Abstract

In Brazil there are eight species of deer (Duarte, 2007), two of which have a vulnerable conservation status. The population decline of species is mainly due to changes and habitat loss, due to the advancement of agricultural and urban frontiers, diseases and predatory activities of hunting. Diseases introduced by cattle are the major causes of mortality, once that numerous viral, bacterial and parasitic diseases common to cattle affect cervids (Pinder & Leeuwenberg, 1997). The anatomopathological findings may be suggestive to many diseases, but in some cases gross lesions are very similar, requiring complementary techniques for diagnosis. Animals affected by epizootic hemorrhagic disease, bluetongue, and adenovirus hemorrhagic disease present in the necropsy similar features as hemorrhagic enteritis, pulmonary edema, petechiae and suffusions in several organs. In the Department of Veterinary Pathology of FCAV-UNESP were conducted over the past 16 years a total of 208 necropsies of Brazilian deers, both free-ranging and from captivity. As in many cases gross lesions are similar and suggestive for various illnesses, this retrospective study aims to make a survey of occurrence of the three viral diseases mentioned above. Archival materials (paraffin embedded tissues) from the Department of Veterinary Pathology will be used to make slides to perform molecular and immunohistochemical techniques to elucidate the possible viral agents involved.
