Abstract

Several studies have found significant associations between exposure to environmental pollutants and harmful effects on population health, an important causative factor for hospital admissions and mortality. Regarding mortality, it was shown that air pollutants increase the risk for death from cardiovascular disease. Thus, the objective of this study is to estimate the association between exposure to environmental pollutants particulate matter , sulfur dioxide and ozone and deaths from cardiovascular disease in individuals aged 50 or over in the city of Sao Jose dos Campos - SP. This is an ecological time series study, covering the period from 01/01/2003 to 31/12/2007. Data of deaths from cardiovascular diseases (ICD 10: I 20 - I25, I10, I11, I15, I60-I69)in individuals with 50 years or more residents of São José dos Campos will be obtained from the Sistema de Informações de Mortalidade (SIM). The data of the levels of pollutants will be obtained from the Companhia de Tecnologia de Saneamento Ambiental (CETESB) and the data of temperature and humidity will be obtained from the Fundação de Ciência, Aplicações e Tecnologia Espaciais (FUNCATE). It will be created a database with information relating to deaths from cardiovascular disease, levels of environmental pollutants and temperature and humidity. Since it is believed that there is a lag effect in relation to exposure to environmental pollutant, it will be built distributed lag models from zero to seven days after exposure. Thus, the statistical analysis to be employed will be the Poisson regression and the program will be "R ". (AU)
