Effect of coloring solutions on the color stability of denture base acrylic resins

Abstract

Both color and aesthetic appearance of complete dentures are important factors which characterize the use of polymeric materials. Although acrylic resins are widely used to fabricate dentures, they present some disadvantages such as color instability. Since the consumption of beverages and the use of month washes can induce color changes on removable complete dentures, the compatibility of these coloring solutions with acrylic resins should be considered in order to preserve the properties of acrylic resins. Therefore, the present study will investigate the effect of both termocycling and immersion of coloring diet and month washes on the color stability of denture base acrylic resins. Four different acrylic resins will be assessed: Onda Cryl, QC 20, Clássico and Lucitone. For each acrylic resin, 8 samples will be submitted to six different types of coloring solutions (Plax-Colgate, Listerine, Oral B, coffee, coke and red wine). Control samples will be immersed in artificial saliva. The sample colors will be measured with a spectrophotometer, using the CIE Lab system, before and after thermocycling, and after 1, 3, 24, 48 and 96 hours of immersion. Thermocycling test will be performed during 5,000 cycles. Data will be submitted to the adherence test to the normal curve, and an appropriate statistical test will be used to compare the mean values of color stability among the groups. (AU)
