Abstract

This project aims to investigate the function and meaning of the Philosophy of Law in The City of Sun, by Tommaso Campanella. Considering that Campanella's thought was influenced by the philosophy of nature of Bernardino Telésio, it is likely that the legal principles prevailing in the City of Sun have originated from that source. In the text, there is a idea based on Natural Law, a universal law and immanent in nature, this being understood as a divine work. From the habits and customs of the inhabitants of the fictional City of Sun, as well as moral and legal standards that guide their behavior, the system and form of government in the city, the notions of State and individual, authority and free will, property and work, this project seeks to identify legal sources and the conception of law used by Campanella. In pursuit of these assumptions, The City of Sun will be examined in order to understand it position within the utopian literary genre and its relationship with the philosophy of law, based on the theorie of Hugo Grotius (1583/1645).
