Abstract

Alcoholism can cause changes in bone tissue and is considered a reducer in bone formation and this situation is related to osteoporosis appearance, in the other side, it exists the rhBMP-2, a bone morphogenetic protein responsible to play an important role in the bone healing process and induce the bone formation. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of alcoholism on the bone repair using critical bone defects in rat calvaria, after the rhBMP-2 application, pure and combined to a collagen matrix. It will be used 80 rats divided into eight groups, and each group will wait 4 and 6 weeks until the sacrifice, considering the beginning of the experiment, the moment of the bone defect creation on rat skulls (5 mm of diameter). The groups are the following: 1) water ad libitum and only with the bone defect, 2) alcohol ad libitum and only with the bone defect, 3) water ad libitum and with the application of 5¼g rhBMP-2 pure on the bone defect, 4) ethanol ad libitum and the application of 5¼g rhBMP-2 pure on the bone defect, 5) water ad libitum and the insertion of collagen sponge as carrier on the bone defect, 6) alcohol ad libitum and the insertion of collagen sponge as carrier on the bone defect, 7) water ad libitum and the application of 5¼g rhBMP-2/collagen sponge on the bone defect area, 8) alcohol ad libitum and the application of 5¼g rhBMP-2/collagen sponge on the bone defect area. The samples of this study will be evaluated by histomorphometrical, immunohistochemical and radiographical methods, and the data will be submitted to statistical examination
