Abstract

Specialized literature indicates that career patterns in various higher education level professions are significantly affected by demands over those in the beginning of the career path, for example the time needed in the preparation period or the time each individual can dedicate to his/her work. The preparation period is essential to gather enough resources to build a successful career and it usually overlaps the period when young academics are expected and expect themselves to get married and have children. Authors have shown that this overlapping has different effects on careers of men and women. This is the main issue this research aims, investigating effects of marriage and children in effectively built careers of a group of academic men and women working in public universities in Brazil in different areas of science. The research will be supported by curriculum analysis, a short ethnography and interviews. (AU)
