Abstract

Defects in continuity of the jawbone may occur after resective or gunshot wounds, cystic lesions expansive, osteorrdionecrose and resection of tumors. The reconstruction of mandibular defects, however, is challenging for oral and maxillofacial surgery, and despite the enormous progress made particularly in the last forty years, the ideal treatment method has not yet been reached. To treat this type of mandibular defect, reconstruction plates of 2.4 mm titanium system has been routinely used in these situations, with or without bone graft immediately. Initially the plates were thicker and more robust, however, the gradual reconstruction plates have become smaller, thinner profile and greater flexibility. Thus, the locking system 2.0mm reconstruction has been introduced as the next generation in the improvement of reconstruction plates. However, few studies have evaluated the use of this system in mandibular reconstruction. One concern that arises, therefore, is whether these tthinner plates even able to withstand the load forces applied to them at the site of the mandibular defects, without fracture of the same. Thus, the objective of the authors in this study is to evaluate comparatively, in vitro, the fixation strength and stress distribution promoted by plates and screws 2.0mm Locking systems and conventional 2.4mm, in reconstruction of mandibular defects with loss of continuity, with or without the graft.
