Abstract

It is now known that sleep is extremely important, and changes in sleep architecture are associated with several diseases such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, etc.. Situations such as high altitude (hypoxia) has been described as potent detrimental to the sleep architecture. Such changes are caused mainly by hormonal changes, such as catecholamines, cortisol, and also of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Moreover, the effects of exercise on sleep patterns in conditions of high altitude are poorly understood. Isolated studies suggest that hypoxia may cause the effects of exercise on the concentration of cytokines and the pattern of sleep may be exacerbated in a manner dependent on the altitude, ie the intensity of hypoxia in which people may be exercising. However, the altitude at which the effects of exercise on sleep patterns become more evident are still unknown. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the role of cytokines on the regulation of sleep after acute exercise at different altitudes. Our hypothesis is exercise performed at high altitude changes the concentration of several cytokines and may thus exert deleterious effects on sleep patterns.
