Abstract The aim of the research is to make an interpretation of Books 1-8 of the Odyssey, as part of a larger project devoted to a reading of the poem as a whole. My study will combine three approaches, based on an specific understanding of Homeric language: the moral approach (according to which the characters can be viewed in terms of their behavior); the epistemic approach (according to which they can also be viewed in terms of their knowledge and relationship with the gods); and, finally, the poetic approach (according to which the text can be viewed in terms of its composition and formularity).
