Abstract Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has an estimated lifetime prevalence of 3% in the general population and has been associated with significant social, professional, academic and familial burden. The serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRI) are the first-line treatment choice for OCD. However, the mechanisms that lead to OCD symptoms improvements with the use of SRI are still unknown. In addition, a significant number of OCD patients do not improve satisfactorily with SRI treatment and, so far, it is not possible to determine beforehand which patients will not improve or which factors may explain non-response. To better understand the neurophysiologic mechanisms associated with OCD treatment, we propose the use of electro physiological measures (such as heart rate variability and skin conductance response) in paradigms of fear condition and exposure to sudden loud tones as a way to evaluate the effect of SRI in each component of the OCD behavioral chain. We aim to evaluate 15 health subjects and 30 OCD patients pre- and post treatment with SRI or placebo. We expect to observe differences in the electrophysiological measures in OCD patients compared to controls and after treatment with SRI. With these results we may determine if the SRI reduce OCD symptoms as consequence of diminishing the aversive respondent component of the OCD behavioral chain. (AU) | |
