Abstract

With this research project we propose to study the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity from the magnetic and electronic structures point of view in classical 4d/5d metals and rare earths systems. This will be done with the combination of advanced spectroscopy techniques and first principles simulations. The system RERh4B4 (RE = Dy, Ho, Er, Tm) will be studied under high pressure conditions so that the rare earth magnetism confined under a "superconducting cage" can be put closer as the crystal lattice is contracted. The electronic and magnetic interactions of the 5d and 4f bands with change in pressure, that affect the superconducting and magnetic macroscopic properties, will be interpreted with the analysis of experimental data and simulations of density of electronic states. With this project, the student Larissa will have the opportunity to obtain a solid basis on condensed matter physics, with the study of both experimental and theoretical methods on magnetic and superconducting materials. Challenging experiments will be done to help answer open questions on the competition between magnetism and superconductivity.
