Abstract

Incisional hernia is the most common complication of abdominal surgery. Despite 100000 ventral hernia repair are performed annually, there is no consensus about which mesh is better. The objective of this study is to use an experimental animal model of incisional hernia to compare biomechanical, inflammatory and cicatricial response of three different meshes on the abdominal hernia repair. Methods: 40 Wistar rats will be submitted to median fascial incision and only skin synthesis. After 21 days, the abdominal hernia developed will be corrected according to four groups: Sham (suture of abdominal wall), Group 1 (suture of abdominal wall and placement of a polypropylene mesh), Group 2 (suture of abdominal wall and placement of polypropylene/polyglecaprone mesh) and Group 3 (suture of abdominal wall and placement of a polypropylene/polyglecaprone mesh covered with a polyglecaprone film). After 21 days the mesh and surrounding tissue will be submitted to macroscopic (presence of adhesions, mesh retraction) and microscopic analysis (inflammatory, cicatricial response). (AU)
