Abstract

Neutrophils play a key role in defending the body against invading microorganisms by phagocytosis, the degranulation, release of myeloperoxidase (MPO) and consequent production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The ROS produced and released by MPO is essential against microbes phagocytosed and when released into the extracellular environment can cause oxidative damage to host tissues. These lesions have been correlated to numerous diseases such as atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer. In order to prevent such oxidative damage the antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory and antitumor of various substances, especially those derived from plants were investigated. The goal of this work is the implementation and consolidation of trials of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor in laboratory NuBBE, aiming a qualitative leap in the screening of compounds with anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor activities. The establishment of fast, efficient enzymatic assays, high reliability and reproducibility in Natural Products Chemistry laboratory will be of great value for research in the area, considering the added value potential of a bioprospecting rationally planned. Natural compounds and some semi-synthetic derivatives of these natural products available on NuBBE database will be used in all tests.
