Abstract

Soil erosion is a natural process of disintegration, decomposition, transport and deposition of material that has been acting on the earth since its beginning. Human action is accelerating this process and brings consequences such as loss of fertile land, water pollution, silting of streams and reservoirs, degradation and reduced productivity. Sustainable management depends primarily on soil conservation. The extent of soil erosion is essential to promote adequate use of soil and water. As an alternative to traditional methods to determine the erosion of soil, dendrogeomorphology is an important tool to determine erosion events by dating the age of the tree, which determines the magnitude of soil loss correlating with the chronology of geomorphological events, such as erosion and sedimentation. By analyzing the formation of growth rings that some tropical tree species present, it can becorrelate with the age of the individual erosive events. This research project through the use of studies dendrogeomorfológicos find records temporal and spatial events such as erosion and sedimentation that are of fundamental importance for the efficiency of conservation programs on soil quality and water. Such records are mapped to the recognition of the susceptibility of areas facing the human impacts resulting from poor land use. It also intends to survey the potential of tree species that have well-defined growth rings dendrogeomorfológicos for studies in the Atlantic Forest biome. (AU)
