Abstract

The use of chilled bull semen has gained significant importance in the last decade, either in the national and international level. In Brazil, this technology has grown significantly over the past three years due to the increased practice of fixed time artificial insemination (FTAI). As in Brazil, Australia and New Zealand shows great potential in AI programs for beef or dairy cattle. The main advantages related to chilled semen are lower sperm concentration per insemination dose, optimization of genetically superior bulls, lower cost of storage and its practical use in AI. These factors together reduce animal production costs, allowing the implementation and dissemination of AI and FTAI techniques in several national livestock production systems. Thus, the aim of the present study is to compare the viability and fertility of chilled bovine semen diluted in BotuBov® with and without the addition of glycerol according the patterns of motility by computadorized method - CASA, plasma membrane integrity, and acrosomal and mitochondrial potential by flow cytometry in samples stored at 0 and 24 hours of storage in different refrigeration systems and after freezing. The fertility will be evaluated after laboratory experiments through fixed time artificial insemination. Data analysis will help to elucidate not only the viability of commercial use of chilled bull semen, but the real influence of its quality on conception rates through FTAI programs, comparing it with frozen samples.
