Abstract

Internal waves are ondulatory movements that occur within the water column associated with density stratification. Those waves with tide frequency are called internal tides. These are intense flows that can influence several patterns such as: sediment dynamics, mixing processes and primary productivity. The Amazon Shelf (AS) is a highly energetic environment located in the north Brazil coast, in which stratification varies considerably temporally and spatially according to the balance between the several forcing variables present in the region. Within the AS some authors suggests the presence of internal tides, however, none specific studies have been conducted over the subject in the AS. This project intends to study internal waves in the AS. The objective is to prove the existence of internal tides in the AS, characterize its behavior and verify its intermittence. To do so, data from the AmasSeds (A Multidisciplinary Amazon Shelf Sediment Study) program will be analyzed. (AU)
