Abstract

The origin, distribution, and fate of the mud deposits located within the inner continental shelf of the state of São Paulo constitute important research topics not explored yet. The sedimentation processes, particularly the current mud distribution among this region may be controlled not only by the hydrodynamics, but also by the geomorphology as a result of the interaction of external (continental, littoral and marine) and internal (tectonic and structural) geological processes. The objective is, therefore, to identify the evidences of hydrodynamic, geomorphic and structural controls on the mud deposits within the inner continental shelf between Peruíbe and São Sebastiao. Two oceanographic campaigns will be conducted on board of the Alpha Delphini vessel to collect the necessary data to test the hypothesis. The hydrodynamics will be obtained by numerical modelling of from waves, tides, wind-induced currents and associated mud transport, and their calibration and validation with in situ mud transport measurements. Submarine topography will be obtained from the analysis of available bathymetric data and from several measurements using a multibeam echosounder. In addition, the collection of seismic profiles will provide insights regarding the stratigraphy and recent geomorphologic evolution, especially focusing on the identification and description of possible prograding-wedge-related deposits. The cartography of surficial sediments facies will be obtained based on side-scan sonar data in combination with the analysis of surficial sediment samples. Additionally, several sediment cores will be taken to calculate the age, sedimentation rate and recent evolution of the mud deposits. In that regard, the mineralogy and chemical analysis of the deposits will serve not only to identify their source area, but also to corroborate the contribution of the Santos estuary to the inner-shelf sediment load and the possible presence of anthropic-related pollution signal originated in Santos harbor.
