Abstract

This study has as an objective the analysis and interpretation of two Preludes by Claude Debussy, Voiles and La Cathédrale Engloutie, as well as analysis and study of the piano Prelude Op 1, No. 4, Olivier Messiaen, comparing the treatment provided by these composers to these pieces, considered the parameters timbre, texture, rhythm, voice leading, scale based material and sets organized, among other things. In this context, the first chapter will focus on the historical aspects of the free form Prelude and of the work of these two composers; the second chapter will consist of presenting the three musical analysis, considering the interrelationship between musical analysis and performance. It justifies itself for expanding the perspective of repertoire of the student in this phase of his training, as well as for promoting the music of the twentieth-century and for contributing to the literature on the subject.
