Abstract

The purpose of this project consists of an analytical study of pieces with the influence of popular music from the American continent in the work of Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971): L'Histoire du Soldat: Tango, Waltz and Ragtime (1918), Piano Rag Music (1919) Preludium for jazz ensemble (1937), Tango, for solo piano (1940, orchestration in 1953) and Ebony Concerto (1945). Plans to encourage debate about the historical approach of ragtime and jazz in the United States and the tango in Argentina, as well as its development in Europe, Stravinsky contact with these popular genres and relationships between popular music of the Americas and the avant-garde composers from Europe. Based on stylistic approaches of American genres, aims to investigate the influence of the popular element in Stravinsky's compositional material, contributing to reflections on the mutual influence between concert music and popular music on the early twentieth century. Aims to raise questions related to the analysis of musical structure and surface parts of the formative works in question. Therefore, a bibliography will be used in order to discuss several key specifics, such as historical context (Hobsbawm, 1995, 2007; JACKSON, 2003; MESSING, 1991, Morgan, 1991), intertextuality (Metzer, 2003; KLEIN, 2005; ALLEN , 2000; SAMOYAULT, 2008), approaches to the popular genres (BERLIN, 1980, SHALL, 1986; SCHAFER and RIEDEL 1973; WALDO, 1976 and Taylor, 1976; SAVIGLIANO, 1994; PELINSKI, 2000, Levine, 1995; WILLIAMS , 1980), and analysis techniques (Tymoczko, 2011; SUSANNI and Antokoletz, 2012; COHN, 2012; STRAUS, 2005; STEIN, 2004; van den Toorn and McGinness, 2012; BERRY, 1987; SCHOENBERG, 1996; LESTER, 1989 , STRAUS, 2005; PEARSALL, 2011; LEWIN, 2002; REHDING and Gollin, 2011; KRAMER, 1988 and 1993; HASTY, 1997).
