Abstract

Studies have shown associations between mathematical abilities and working memory, which is important and necessary to the process of understanding, learning and reasoning (Baddeley, 1986). There is evidence that musical training is subsidized by the capacity of working memory. However more studies that bring knowledge about the relationship between working memory and mathematical abilities during the development of musical skills in children with Dyscalculia Development are needed. Objectives: 1) investigate the effects of musical training on performance tests of working memory and mathematical abilities of control and experimental groups by assessing pre-and post-musical training. 2) To evaluate the effect of order of exposure to both techniques of musical training (percussion versus auditory-musical) in performance on tests of working memory, and mathematical abilities in experimental and control groups. Participants: 60 children with 8 years old, of both sexes, of public schools in the city of Assis, divided into two groups: experimental group (EG, N = 30), children with Dyscalculia Development and Control Group (CG; N = 30) children with typical development. The EG Group will be selected from the teacher's assessment and confirmed by the TDE (Stein, 1994). All children will be pre-evaluated by instruments for the following areas: Humor (EAM, Carmo & Figueiredo, 2005; ISS-I, Lipp & Lucarelli, 1999) mathematics (Zareki-R & Dellatolas Von Aster, 2006) and working memory (AWMA, Alloway, 2007). After six months of musical training, all children will experience a post-assessment with the same tools to verify effects of musical training. (AU)
