Abstract

This research aims to answer the following question: how did Cuba, during the transition of the capitalist economy to the socialist economy, rearrange the agricultural state inherited from the plantation structure? Through 1963 and 1964, an economic debate about the agrarian administration in the transition economy had occupied Cuban government and society, involving economists and theorists all over the world. The different models proposed in this debate mean to overcome the underdevelopment economy structure through a socialist way. Until 1959, the foreign domination over Cuban production and trade is a constant in the history of the island . The socialist revolution opens the possibility of a new economic development model. In this way, the agrarian production performed a keyrole in the combination of social revolution and economic development. The economic dependant on sugar triggers paradoxical change: the importation substitution and the production diversification are financed by the monoculture. In 1970 occurred the 10-million-metric-tonne sugar crop crises. This year is taken as a possible landmark of the sugar political management breakdown. How is the agricultural state of the plantation modified from 1959 to 1970? This research will investigate the agrarian production forms during these years, in the economic transition context. (AU)
