Abstract

For over ten years the CGIL (Italian General Confederation of Labour) has been helping atypical and flexible workers in getting Italy's labor rights and social protection. The NIdiL (New Work Identities) is linked to the trade union CGIL which is dedicated specifically to this growing portion of workers in Italy, which also includes workers associated with production cooperatives. In Brazil, the SMABC (ABC Metalworkers' Union), which is affiliated to the CUT (Central Única dos Trabalhadores) and collect a long history of social claims for their employees, has a similar proposal to represent the workers cooperated, giving them the same rights to expression and vote that has a formal worker unionized. Our research proposes a comparative study between the Brazilian SMABC and Italian NIdiL, aiming, among other things, verify the viability of a union - institution traditionally directed to employees - represent workers'self-management.
