Characterization of auditory steady-state responses thresholds in the first six months of life

Abstract

The thresholds of Auditory Steady-State Responses (ASSR) in newborns up to the sixth month of life help in the prediction of psychoacoustic thresholds in a period in which the infant does not precisely respond to behavioral tests. To describe the changes in the thresholds of ASSR related to age in term newborns, so as characterize the influence of the maturational process in the electrical response of the auditory system. It is a transversal study, in which 60 newborns in the age range 0 and six months of live, will be assessed. The sample will be divided into three age ranges for the study, that is, GI: 0-1 months and 29 days, n=20; GII: 2-3 months and 29 days, n=20; GIII: 4-6 months, n=20. The SSAR will be researched by utilizing pure tones in the carrier frequencies 0,5; 1; 2 and 4 kHz, modulated 100% in amplitude and 20% in frequency, with a modulation of 84.375; 89.062; 93.750; and 98.437 Hz, respectively. For the thresholds research, the intensity will vary from 40 to 0 dB NA, with stimuli presented through 3A insertion phones, in both simultaneous and monoaural forms; electrodes positioned in Cz (active), ipsilateral M1 or M2 (reference) and contralateral mastoid (ground); gain of 50000, 1-300 Hz band pass filter, 6 dB/octave. The intensity of the sound stimulus utilized to genarate the SSAR within the external hearing duct of the child will be monitored using a silicone tube probe microphone of the Hearing aid Analyzer FONIX FP 35 equipment (Frye Electronics).
