Abstract Dengue is an infectious disease of high morbidity and mortality that affects a large number of individuals in tropical and subtropical countries of the world. Infection with any of the four serotypes of dengue virus (DENV-1, -2, -3 and -4) may be asymptomatic or lead to clinical conditions ranging from an unknown and self-limiting fever, through classic dengue fever (DF) and severe called dengue hemorrhagic fever/dengue shock syndrome (DHF / DSS). Several methods are used to diagnose dengue, as molecular methods, serological methods and the detection of the viral NS1 protein. Currently, there are circulating around the country the DENV-1, -2 and -3; while DENV-4 was detected only in the North Region. In Ribeirao Preto, the first epidemic occurred between November 1990 and March 1991, caused by DENV-1 with 2305 confirmed cases. The largest epidemic of the city occurred in 2010, when 29,959 cases and nine deaths were reported, with a higher prevalence of DENV-1, but DENV-2 and -3 were also detected. Between January and February 2011, 2,252 cases and one death have been reported, with the circulation of DENV-1, -2 and -3. In this work, we aim to characterize molecularly the viruses isolated in Ribeirão Preto from 2009 to 2012 and to perform phylogenetic and evolutionary analysis of them. (AU) | |
