Abstract

Sepsis is defined as a systemic inflammatory response that occurs during an infection. This syndrome is a clinical problem of great relevance due to its high prevalence and high mortality rate, especially when there is multiple organ dysfunction. In order to study the degree of cardiac dysfunction by canine patients, 20 female dogs will be assessed with no restriction to breed and body weight, that had sepsis due to complex cystic endometrial hyperplasia-pyometra. The animals will be submitted to cardiocirculatory assessment by measurement of blood pressure, conventional ECG tests and an hour ambulatory (Holter) for observation of heart rate variability in the time domain and also Doppler echocardiography to measure the size of the heart chambers and determination of systolic myocardial function, diastolic and global. Blood samples will be collected for evaluation of serum levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukins 1 beta, 6, 10 and C-reactive protein as well as biochemical analysis of serum alanine amino transferase, alkaline phosphatase, urea, creatinine, total protein and albumin. After these procedures, the animals will be submitted to ovariohysterectomy. Fifteen and 30 days after surgery, the animals will be re-submitted to all circulatory assessment procedures and blood tests. The results of the studied parameters will be subjected to waste normality test (Cramer-von Mises) and analysis of variance, followed by Tukey's test for comparison of means. The values will also be submitted to multiple regression test. Statistical analyzes will be performed at 5% significance level. (AU)
