Analysis of plasma protein complement and metabolic risk factors in obese adolescents undergoing treatment at the Centro de Recuperação e Educação Nutricional (CREN)

Abstract

It is well recognized that obese individual's present elevated risk for hypertension, precoce markers for cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance, labored breathing, increased risk of fractures and psychological changes. It is also known that obesity modifies the concentrations of adipokines such as interleukins 6 and 10, leptin, adiponectin and TNF-α- Nevertheless, no evidences were found for the effect of nutritional recovery in obese adolescents, especially about the plasma proteome of these individuals. The challenge of the present study is to evaluate the effects of nutritional recovery in obese adolescents. To answer this question metabolic factors will be measured such as blood pressure, body composition (lean and total fat), alanine aminotransferase - ALT, aspartate aminotransferase - AST, glucose, insulin and lipid profile. Proteomic analysis of blood plasma will be also performed. Thus, we intend to determine the quality of these anti-obesity initiatives, and develop an effective strategy for obesity prevention. For this purpose, we will develop a methodology for nutritional intervention and physical activity for a period of 12 months in obese adolescents. This study aims to develop a healthier lifestyle in the long term. In addition, we will evaluate whether the multidisciplinary treatment improves obesity and associated disorders and also if the treatment alters the pattern of protein complement of plasma at three different times (1st time: before starting treatment, 2nd time: after 6 months of treatment, 3rd time: the end of one year of treatment).
