Abstract Poales is a representative order including one third of monocotyledon species. The xyrid clade includes Xyridaceae, Eriocaulaceae and Mayacaceae and is weakly supported. Floral anatomy studies show that Eriocaulaceae and Xyridaceae share several homologies not present in Mayacaceae. In the infra-familiar level, Xyridaceae is the most problematic family and its monophyly requires testing. The anatomical characteristics of flower and vegetative organs of Xyris contrast with those of Abolboda and Orectanthe, supporting the division of the family into two subfamilies. Since the inter and infra-familiar relationships in Xyridaceae are not yet well established, this project aims to study the embryology and seed development of Xyridaceae species to assess characters with taxonomic value. The results will be compared with those of Eriocaulaceae and Mayacaceae available in the literature to contribute to the understanding of the relationships within the xyrids. | |
