Abstract

The genus Brachycephalus is endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and currently fourteen species are described. Most species occur in isolation in the Serra do Mar and Serra da Mantiqueira ranges, which suggests that the known diversity of Brachycephalus is underestimated. Currently, the species limits and the naming of new species is based on traits of external morphology and osteology. Although morphological traits are used in the description of new species, these traits may not be phylogenetic informative because morphological evolution has been conservative in anurans. This limitation suggests that molecular data, particularly nuclear and mitochondrial sequences, can contribute to the definition of limits of variation between populations and also to estimate phylogenetic relationships. The primary objective of this project is to apply principle of integrated taxonomy to contribute to a better understanding of the taxonomy, systematics and evolution of Brachycephalus. Specifically, the objectives are: (1) to define the taxonomic and evolutive status of the population of Brachycephalus from Morro do Prumirim, Ubatuba, State de São Paulo: (2) to define the taxonomic status of populations of Brachycephalus nodoterga; and (3) estimate the phylogenetic relationships of the new populations and rate of Brachycephalus nodoterga using the multispecies coalescent model.
