Abstract

The genus Brachycephalus currently comprises 30 species endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Due to the small adult body size and the narrow environmental tolerance, most of the species within this genus exhibits restricted distribution associated with mountain slopes and are supposed to evolve through allopatric speciation. In addition to the barriers represented by mountain ranges and valleys, the gradient of climatic and ecological conditions in montane regions can represent important barriers involved in the interruption of gene flow and population divergence. With the information available so far, the Brachycephalus diversification should occur in distinct ways in lowlands and high-elevation sites, as well as in the tropical and subtropical Atlantic Forest conditions. Herein, we propose to focus on the genetic and phenotypic divergences in Brachycephalus populations along their spatial and altitudinal distributions. We intend to work on phylogenetic comparative methods, landscape analyses, and learn new molecular techniques of next-generation sequencing to improve our knowledge about the evolutionary history of this toadlets.
