Evaluation of the effectiveness of the use of insecticide impregnated collar and recombinant vaccine against canine visceral leishmaniasis

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a recombinant vaccine against leishmaniasis in dogs as well as the use of a repellent insecticide-impregnated collar through a cohort study to be conducted in two regions, being one with a high transmission and the other with a low transmission of canine visceral leishmaniasis. To this end, we propose the construction of eight cohorts, four of them in the in area of high transmission and four in the area of low transmission. In each area there will be a cohort of vaccinated individuals, a cohort of individuals with a collar impregnated with repellent, a cohort of individuals vaccinated and with collar impregnated with repellent, and finally, a cohort of unvaccinated and without collars. Biological samples will be collected from animals of all cohorts in three occasions at the beginning of the experiment, six months after the start of the experiment and one year after the start of the experiment. Serum samples will be subjected to serodiagnosis by ELISA and IFAT, the whole blood samples for PCR and isolation of the agent, the lymph node puncture for PCR and isolation of the agent and the skin biopsy for PCR. The impact of control measures for VL in dogs will be measured by the ratio of odds of seroconversion and / or PCR positivity (CI 95%) among subjects exposed and not exposed to risk of acquiring the parasite. Exposure to risk means the absence of control measures (vaccination or collar). (AU)
