Abstract

A significant portion of the effort on the research of quantitative methods applied on industrial engineering problems is related to the studies of scheduling techniques. Attracted by the practical relevance and the theoretical importance, several researches have been studied those problems. Today, with globalization and increasing importance of integration between the supply chain components, it's important to add more elements on the classical scheduling problems, using concepts like inventory control, distribution planning, among others. One of the difficulties is to use exact methods that, due the complexity of the search space of some scheduling problems, can require an infeasible computational effort. To avoid this risk, alternative solutions have been developed to obtain near-optimal solutions with an acceptable computational effort. One strategy is to use meta-heuristics. The Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is a relative new meta-heuristic that have been used to solve scheduling problems. In this scenario, this research project has two main goals: (1) extend knowledge of the candidate in the scheduling theory and it's integration to logistic problems; (2) extend knowledge on the usage of the ACO meta-heuristic in scheduling problems. As results of this project, one expects that each objective generates one paper to be submitted on each magazine. (AU)
