Abstract

The usage of high dynamic range images has become a common expedient in lighting studies, due to the possibilities in the luminance distribution storage in a given scene. Among the existing cameras, the single-lens reflex (SLR) are the most versatile, for their ability to control incident light on the sensor, and the possibility of adjusting the viewing angle by lenses choice. This work will use circular fisheye lenses, since its viewing angle allows to take full hemispheric sky dome shots, a far more comprehensive procedure than that achieved through manual measurements made with luminance meters. Presently, virtual modeling that propose to work with natural lighting use daylight availability data provided by predictive models, such as ISO 15469:2004 (CIE S 011 / E: 2003). The objective of this research is to use HDRI to obtain the sky luminance distribution data. The equipment used will be calibrated according to established methods to state the reliability of data analysis and interpretation. Initially, luminance values obtained in the measurements will be calculated and compared with the mentioned ISO standard. The proposition of an algorithm to extract these data in a simplified manner, from the reading of the image properties, will enable the creation of a automated system and a digital database. The obtained sky luminance distribution can be further used in simulation programs, wich will facilitate the process of virtual modelling that emphasizes reliability, since the input data are derived from measurements of a physical reality.
