Abstract

Complex behavior in the form of spontaneous emergence of spatio-temporal structures in reaction-transport systems has become a very active research area. Reaction-migration systems at the electrified solid liquid interface are considered ideal model systems in such investigations. It is proposed in this project the study of spatio-temporal pattern formation in far from equilibrium electrochemical systems. Specifically, the study will be carried out by means of experiments, modeling and numerical simulations, and the electro-oxidation of small organic molecules on platinum will be the investigated reactions. The experiments will be performed with an array of 32 platinum electrodes globally controlled and whose currents will be individually monitored by means of a multichannel data acquisition system. An one-dimensional annular geometry will be initially adopted. Further development includes the use of two-dimensional geometries. The base model for the spatiotemporal simulations consists of three differential equations with the space dependence initially restricted to the electrode potential.
