Abstract

In this work, we propose the development of a human eye image system for mobile devices based on the Android Operational System. The objective is to measure and assess various human iris and pupil features, seeking applications both in security as well as in medical and industrial areas. Although computer vision and image processing techniques are extensively used in these areas, the majority of the specific image systems are complex, bulky, heavy, and hard to transport. Taking into account the evolution of mobile device technology, like Smartphones and Tablets, which are light, small, portable, and efficient, their use as computer systems is immediate. For example, for some simple ophthalmologic measures, today is necessary that the patient goes to the medical lab. With a portable embedded technology system, the patient, himself could do the measures and send them to his doctor. Another application of this technology is in the public security system, aiming at the identification of one "suspect" person. In this case, the police officer doesn't need to identify the suspect at the police station, which leads not only to a great cost to the state but also to a delay in effective actions. Faced with such adversity and paradigms we propose a human eye image acquisition and computer processing with mobile devices, since smartphones and tablets are becoming more widespread and with more processing capability. It is worth emphasizing that the successful development of our proposal will allow the future implementation of high fidelity and portability security systems, for faster medical diagnostics and cheaper industrial quality control processes.(AU)
