Abstract

Sexual exploitation of children and adolescents is configured as a relevant problem in national and international scene since the year 1996, when internationally the First World Congress took place in Stockholm, representing the most significant moment of the beginning of discussions and studies aimed at understanding the phenomenon, its causes and ways of facing it. Due the complexity and the reality experienced by children and adolescents who are subjected to sexual exploitation, this research aims to characterize the phenomenon of ESCA in various dimensions, and their goals are: to investigate and analyze the prevalence, distribution, people involved in the production the phenomenon (the exploited and exploiters), its causes and forms of organization and related factors through literature search of scientific articles published between 2000 to 2011 in national and international English language journals available through database of CAPES. After the literature search, the material will undergo a systematic review for the selection and presentation of relevant results on the subject. This time period was selected because, after the Stockholm Conference, there was growth and progress in the publication of scientific materials and increased visibility of the issue and because the analysis made in the Third World Congress of 2008 had pointed out some remaining gaps in the understanding and fighting the phenomenon.
