In recent years, the overexploitation of marine resources is the main problem of marine systems worldwide. In Brazil, due to stronger types of human pressure, species of coast environments are showing significant reductions in their populations, reaching in some cases, the threat of extinction. The dusky grouper, Epinephelus marginatus is a teleost fish, sequential hermaphrodite, protogynous, which is threatened by IUCN (The World Conservation Union). Because of the protogynous hermaphroditism, obtaining males is a problem for the reproduction of E. marginatus in captivity however, our research group has made possible the process of sex inversion of this species using aromatase inhibitors (AI). Since the process of sex reversal of E. marginatus was established, our research group aims to investigate other difficulties in domestication of this species, as captive breeding and the larvae production. Thus, the main objective of this project is to better understand the basic aspects of larvae metabolism, in order to improve the larvae production of this species, aiming a future restocking program in southeastern Brazil. Besides also investigate the physiological responses in two rearing conditions (direct feed or mesocosmos), and the larvae will have its metabolism investigated over the first 25 days of development, using morphologic and metabolic tools.
